Cool, Sweet Summer Treats from Starbucks

Things are definitely heating up in Metro Manila, with temperatures rising well past the 30ºC mark. While I’m missing those days of wearing long-sleeved tops and those nights of bundling up in my blanket, I’m happy to have an excuse to indulge my love for ice-cold beverages. And when I say beverages, I mean coffee, of course! If there’s one coffee shop that’s my go-to for my caffeine fix, it’s Starbucks—as you may well know from my past posts. To usher in their summer offerings, Starbucks held a Frappuccinos with Friends bloggers’ event yesterday at one of their newest branches in Bonifacio Global City, Starbucks RCBC. My friend/editor/co-blogger Liana invited me as one of her two guests, and I was only thrilled to tag along. Prior to this, I’d been to only one of Starbucks’ events, the launch of their Reserve stores, which I covered for Hitlist. While that was rather formal, this affair was fun and relaxed, marked with bright, colorful balloons, tasty snacks, and refreshingly cool new drinks. I’d fought through a horrible round of traffic to get to the Fort—thanks to …

Starbucks Espresso Confections

I don’t know about you, but I’m always excited whenever Starbucks launches their seasonal drinks. I love the thought of going to a coffee shop that’s so familiar to me and being able to try something different. Last holidays, they changed their traditional red-cup offerings by jazzing up the whip and sprinkles on their Toffee Nut Latte and Peppermint Mocha and introducing the Christmas Cookie Latte, which I really enjoyed. This year, they’re starting on a sweet note with their Espresso Confections—the Chestnut Praline Latte and Raspberry Truffle Mocha. This official photo from Starbucks is so gorgeous, I just had to post it. Check out that cheesecake. Mmm, I can almost taste its rich, creamy goodness. I had the chance to drop by Starbucks after my spa date with my BFF last Sunday. I knew that I had to try the Chestnut Praline Latte. Luckily for me, my friend ordered the Raspberry Truffle Mocha—mostly because she was drawn to the cotton candy-colored whip—so I got to try both drinks in one go.   First, let’s talk about the …

Weihnachtsmarkt Rathausmarkt, Hamburg

Can you believe that it’s Christmastime once again? We don’t get snow on our side of the globe, but the weather’s notably cooler, especially at night, and the streets twinkle with beautiful fairy lights. Throw in some holiday tunes and a delicious cup of coffee, and it’s the perfect time for reminiscing. Four years ago, after my colleague Sheila and I had our training in the little town of Löhne, Germany, we made our way to the not-so-little city of Hamburg to experience ourselves some European Christmas spirit. Of course, our first stop had to be their Rathaus—German for city hall.   As we walked up the steps of the subway, our heads were drawn up to the impressive sandstone walls housing the seat of Hamburg’s government. To give you an idea of just how grand this neo-Renaissance building is, its number of rooms tops that of London’s Buckingham Palace. Awesome, right? We would’ve wanted to join one of the guided tours to its public areas, but since we had a free city tour to catch, we decided to simple explore the sights …

Because you’ll never go wrong with a classic

Taking a break from my usual coffee fare to indulge in an old favorite. No one does hot chocolate quite like Starbucks–it’s just the right amount of sweetness with those oh-so-delightful shavings (or chunks?) of chocolate. Even with non-fat milk and “light” whip (supposedly), it’s the perfect treat after a week with a stuffy nose. Now I feel like cozying up with a favorite blanket while listening to the rain pour outside. ❤ (Unfortunately, it's still quite warm where I am; thus, the 'over ice').

Starbucks Dark Mocha White Chocolate Pudding Frappuccino

Yessiree, today’s the day! I woke up extra early to finally apply for my Social Security I.D. card, a process that took me about an hour. Surprising–in a good way–considering the other stories I’ve heard. As a reward to ourselves for completing our morning agenda, my mom and I stopped by Starbucks on the way home. She knew that I’d been waiting for this new drink, and since she was a fan of Dark Mocha Frappuccino, she was happy to oblige my requested pit stop. One of the first things that I noticed when I approached the counter was the announcement about the buy one, take one promo for the new drinks from 2 to 5 pm today. Of course, my initial reaction was: “Dang, should I just come back later?” (That was past nine in the morning). Then I figured it was too much effort. Besides, I wasn’t about to drink two of those drinks in one day when I hadn’t even tried them to begin with! And there’s the GERD factor to consider. So …

Things that made me smile

So I had this whole serious blog post planned for tonight, but since my eyes are bugging the heck out of me (time to visit the doctor again for my abnormally dry eyes), I’ll keep this short and sweet. Here are two things I spotted in Makati today that made me smile. Should you even be surprised that both of them have something to do with coffee? I don’t think so. One of the things that made my day–a photo teaser of Starbucks’ third quarter feature drink: Dark Mocha White Chocolate Pudding. The white chocolate bit alone’s enough to get me excited about this drink, and the dark mocha’s a plus. Not too sure about the pudding part, but I’m game to try unique coffee concoctions. Could this be the Frappuccino to restore my liking for blended coffee drinks? Watch out for my review next week! Monday  Tuesday can’t come soon enough ❤

Starbucks Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino

It used to be that Frappuccinos were my go-to drinks in Starbucks. Then I discovered that they were probably the most sugar-loaded drinks on their menu, so I compromised with iced drinks instead. I’ve been alternating between the iced White Chocolate Mocha and the iced Caramel Macchiato and, more recently, the iced Asian Dolce Latte. Though my blog entry about it might suggest otherwise, that specific latte did grow on me, and it’s been my regular Starbucks order since, oh, late March. Sadly, they’re now in the process of finishing their last stock of the ADL. To replace it, they’re reintroducing two previously featured drinks — the Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino and the Red Bean Green Tea Frappuccino. I am not a tea person (it reminds me of grass and I’d rather have my greens in salad form), so the red bean’s definitely off my list. But since several of my friends have been raving about the Mocha Cookie Crumble AND, hey, I’m a cookie fan, I decided to take a brief hiatus from my …

Starbucks Asian Dolce Latte

…The Queen of Procrastination strikes again. To be fair, I’ve realized that if I don’t write about something new that I’ve tried right away, I’ll most probably end up not writing about it at all. And so, without further ado, I introduce you to Starbucks’ latest seasonal drink: Meet the Asian Dolce Latte. I’ve seen adverts of this a couple of times now, but since the Starbucks near my house is now CLOSED–something I still haven’t come to terms with; it was less than five minutes away from my house!!!–it was only tonight that I got to try it. I looked it up just now and discovered that it was first launched last January 31, during the opening of Starbucks’ flagship store in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. It’s supposed to be the equivalent of Vietnam’s trademark ca phe sua da, which is basically strong coffee mixed with condensed milk. This type of coffee is not unique to Vietnam–it’s actually quite common among Asia; hence, the “Asian” in the “Dolce Latte”. According to Starbucks, Asian Dolce Latte is “the …

Pumped Up Wednesdays: Starbucks’ Peppermint Mocha

Among the treats that I look forward to each Christmas are Starbucks’ holiday drinks. Every year come the start of the -ber months, I eagerly anticipate the arrival of November, which heralds the revamping of Starbucks branches nationwide in shimmering glitter and joyful color, and the replacement of those trademark white and green cups with bold red ones. Blackboards are erased, new posters are displayed, all announcing that the trio we’ve been waiting for is back — Peppermint Mocha, Toffee Nut Latte and Dark Cherry Mocha. When I learned that the season of Christmas caffeine cheer has indeed finally started, I just had to pass by my nearest Starbucks right after a grocery run. It didn’t matter that I haven’t gotten the official go signal from my doctor. I couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to uphold my own personal Christmas tradition: ordering my first cup of Peppermint Mocha. Stepping up to the cashier, I wavered between that and the Toffee Nut Latte. The peppermint won, mostly because those red sprinkles lying on a bed …
